MIDDLE
EAST TRAVELERS UP SINGAPORE'S VISITOR FIGURES
The
Singapore Tourism Board recently announced the results of Singapore's
tourism performance for the Middle East at a special event in Dubai.
Globally, the tourism sector generated an estimated USD 8.3 billion in
tourism receipts (TR) in 2006, exceeding the target of USD 7.8 billion and
posting a double digit growth of 14.5 per cent over 2005 - a new record for
Singapore.
ATM TO REFLECT
CHANGING GLOBAL & REGIONAL LANDSCAPE
The
region's foremost travel and tourism show, ATM '07 will mark its 14th annual
edition in Dubai this May. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh
Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the
UAE, Ruler of Dubai, and under the auspices of the Department of Tourism and
Commerce Marketing, the trade show will run at the Dubai International
Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) from May 1-4. It is a universally-recognised
show specifically dedicated to unlock the business potential within the
Middle East and Pan Arab region. The four days of intensive meetings,
seminars, press conferences and social networking opportunities unites the
key market players from six continents, making it an essential business
event
QATAR SEEKS
OWN TOURISM NICHE
With some 3000 hotel rooms to be added this year alone, Qatar is taking its
$15bn master plan forward. QATAR, long popular with visitors from the Gulf
for short breaks, has over the years also established significant markets in
Europe – particularly the German-speaking countries. The fact that many
tourists (though few realise it) receive a joint visa for Qatar and Oman on
arrival in Doha (or vice-versa) obviously makes the two Gulf states an ideal
combination. The country received some 850,000 visitors in 2006 and expects
to receive an annual 1.4 million visitors by 2010 – to which end the country
has ear-marked an investment of $15 billion in tourism infrastructure
investment.
DUBAI HOTEL
REVENUES JUMP
Revenues of Dubai hotels increased by 22.78 per cent in 2006 amid
high occupancy rates and record average earnings per room, the tourism
department said. Dubai also saw an increase of about 6.5 per cent in the
number of tourists who stayed at city hotels. Lodging and non-lodging
revenues of hotels and hotel apartments stood at Dh10.83 billion last year
compared to Dh8.82 billion in 2005, the Department of Tourism and Commerce
Marketing (DTCM) said. Dubai hotels attracted 6.5 million guests in 2006
against 6.1 million in 2005
SHANGRILA-LA, QARYAL BERI, TO
COMPLETE 1ST PHASE SOON
Shangri-La
Hotels & Resorts, one of Asia Pacific's leading luxury hotel groups,
recently announced that the construction of the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al
Beri (Abu Dhabi), is nearing completion and that this five-star luxury hotel
will open its doors in the second quarter of 2007 (for the first phase of
this prestigious project). Already rumored to be another remarkably unique
hospitality icon in the making, the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, has
been conceived in order to fit in perfectly with Abu Dhabi's overall
philosophy to get the best of the best for its travel and tourism industry.
